The renewal of the Pilgrimage continues. Posted on 16/11/2006 at 11:14 GMT by Bishop David Silk
The renewal of the Pilgrimage continues. This year we transferred to our new date - the third Saturday in June. That may account for the fact that we were just a little down on numbers compared with last year when we had recorded a 25% increase on the pervious years. It was particularly a pleasure to note the continuing growth in the number of younger pilgrims, especially those for whom Father Ron and Jackie were making provision.
At the AGM in October we resolved to put in hand a review of the new style and shape of the Pilgrimage with a view to a report to the Council and the AGM in 2007. Any pilgrims who wish to take part in that conversation should send their comments to the Secretary Robin Thwaites.
Particularly exciting news is the decision of the Council to enter into a five-year partnership with WaterAid. This is a charity simply dedicated to the provision of clean water in many places around the world. There are no political or ethical ifs and buts - it is just about water. If we can raise the first £5000 by next June we shall be able to "own" a particular project. It is my hope that in the following year - 2008 - we may be able to hijack the appropriate bishop from the Lambeth Conference.
Glastonbury is a wonderful place! I well recall how in 1958 I was brought to the ruins and at once knew that there was something numinous about the place. That feeling has never left me, and I am constantly drawn back to place where the Christian roots in England are so much to be experienced.
Glastonbury is like an electric battery whose cells are charged with the holiness and glory of God, and with the devotion and joy of his people.
Come on 16 June 2007 and bring a busload of pilgrims with you. And... could your parish lay on a coffee morning or two for our WaterAid project?
Grace and peace be with you and yours
+ David Silk
